On Friday 10th October 2025, OPPORTUNE hosted its latest Roots Race session, “Engineering Real Futures,” at Aston University, bringing together engineering and technology students for an afternoon of industry insight, learning, and inspiration.
The event was designed to help students explore real career journeys, develop employability skills, and gain a clearer understanding of the opportunities available in the fast-evolving world of engineering and digital technology.
Bridging Education and Industry
The session featured a guest appearance from Jamie Daniels, a Digital Manufacturing Systems Specialist at Rolls-Royce, who shared an honest and insightful look into his career journey, the realities of the engineering industry, and the future of work.
Students had the opportunity to ask Jamie questions about career paths, skills employers value most, and how technology particularly AI and digital transformation is reshaping engineering roles today.
Interactive Learning in Action
Alongside the Q&A, the session included an interactive activity led by OPPORTUNE’s Founder, Clifford Yeboah, encouraging students to identify the skills that shape real-world engineering careers. The activity challenged participants to think critically about teamwork, adaptability, innovation, and problem-solving — all core to success in the workplace.
Collaboration and Support
The event was delivered in close collaboration with the Aston University Careers and Placements team, with special thanks to Hilary Barrett and Olivia Roden for their outstanding support in coordinating and hosting the session. Their contribution helped ensure a smooth experience for all attendees and a strong platform for future collaboration.
Looking Ahead
Roots Race: Engineering Real Futures is part of OPPORTUNE wider Roots Race series — a growing initiative that connects students with professionals across different industries, helping them gain practical knowledge, inspiration, and confidence to pursue their goals.
As OPPORTUNE continues to expand its reach across universities and colleges, the focus remains the same: empowering young people aged 15–25 with employability skills, industry insight, and real-world connections.
